Rebates and incentives in Sydney

Sydney homeowners can take advantage of both federal and NSW-based solar rebates to reduce upfront costs. The most common program is the Small-scale Technology Certificate (STC) rebate, available nationwide, while NSW also offers targeted incentives for low-income households and interest-free loans for clean energy upgrades. Read more below about available rebates and incentives in Sydney.

Federal rebates and incentives available in Sydney

Solar PV (rooftop)

Through the Small‑scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) installers apply the value of Small‑scale Technology Certificates (STCs) up‑front as a discount.

Battery storage

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program (CHBP) starts 1 July 2025, offering around a 30% discount on eligible small‑scale battery systems at point‑of‑sale (via installer/retailer).

Hot Water Heat Pumps (HWHP)

Eligible systems under the Small-Scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) receive STCs (value varies by zone/size). State‑based additional rebates vary by jurisdiction.

Solar batteries in Sydney

Solar batteries let you store excess power from your panels during the day and use it at night when electricity rates are higher, lowering bills and increasing energy independence. While there is no dedicated NSW battery rebate, homeowners can still access federal solar rebates and interest free loans through selected NSW programs.

  • Maximise your solar savings – Store and use every bit of free energy your system produces.
  • Eliminate bill shock – Reduce reliance on expensive grid electricity.
  • Future-proof your home – Get ahead of rising energy costs and policy changes.

It was great communication. The system works really well. I ended up putting a battery on the top. I get no bills at all and the electricity company? Owes me money. One of the best things I’ve done.

Great fast installation with very professional staff that go the extra mile to help explain the system. Very helpful and would recommend these guys if you are looking at having solar installed. After having another system installed 7 years ago and having it break down just out of warranty, the price to have it repaired was the price of one of the cheap small systems, so we opted for a larger higher quality system which is backed by a larger warranty. The system we purchased will pay for itself in no time at all. Thanks again.

From the time we had Allanah visit us and talk to us about changing to Solar and battery power we knew it was the right thing to do. Within a few weeks we had them installed. The electricians were fantastic. The whole procedure went so smoothly. I love walking outside and seeing the batteries knowing we are not just saving a lot of money but we are doing our little bit to help our world.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get a quote for solar in Sydney?

Getting a quote is simple. You can request a free solar assessment online with Smart Energy.

Our team will evaluate your roof, energy usage, and location to design the most cost-effective system for your home. You’ll receive a detailed quote outlining your expected savings, rebate eligibility, and payback period. It’s all obligation-free.

Who is the best solar company in Sydney?

When choosing a solar company in Sydney, look for Clean Energy Council–accredited installers with strong customer reviews and long product warranties.

Smart Energy has completed thousands of installations across NSW and provides local support throughout Sydney. Every system includes our Smart Care plan, which offers proactive monitoring, priority service, and no surprise costs. This gives homeowners peace of mind long after installation.

What direction should solar panels face in Sydney?

For the best year-round performance, solar panels in Sydney should face north at an angle of around 25 to 30 degrees.

North-facing panels capture the most sunlight across all seasons, while east- or west-facing arrays can be used to target morning or afternoon energy use. A qualified installer will design your system for maximum daily efficiency based on your roof and household habits.

Does solar work well in Sydney’s weather?

Yes, Sydney’s mild climate is perfect for solar energy. Even on cloudy days, panels still generate 10 to 25 percent of their usual output thanks to diffused sunlight.

Rain helps by naturally cleaning the panels, and Sydney’s coastal temperatures reduce the risk of overheating, which improves efficiency compared to hotter inland regions.

Across the year, solar systems in Sydney maintain consistent performance and excellent return on investment.

How long does it take to install solar in Sydney?

Once scheduled, most Sydney solar installations are completed in one to two days.

After installation, your distributor (such as Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy) typically grants permission to operate within one to two weeks. Smart Energy handles all paperwork and ensures a smooth connection process.

Do I need council approval to install solar in Sydney?
In most cases, you don’t need council approval for a standard rooftop solar system in Sydney. Systems under 10kW are classed as exempt development under NSW planning rules.

However, approval may be required if your property is heritage-listed, located in a heritage conservation area, or part of a strata building. Your installer can confirm whether approval is needed and manage any required documentation.

Is there a solar battery rebate in Sydney?

Yes. While Sydney no longer has a standalone state rebate, residents can access the federal Solar Battery Rebate under the Cheaper Home Batteries Program.

This program offers up to $8,000 off the cost of a new home battery. Homeowners can also earn $250 to $400 for connecting their battery to a VPP, with the incentive claimable twice within three years.

These combined offers can reduce the total cost of a solar battery by roughly 30%, making it far more affordable for Sydney households.

Can I add a battery to my solar system in Sydney?

Yes, most Sydney homes can easily add a solar battery to an existing system. Modern inverters support battery expansion, and if your system is older, it can often be upgraded with a hybrid inverter.

Adding a battery allows you to store excess energy for use at night, increasing self-consumption and reducing your power bills further. Many Sydney homeowners also connect their batteries to Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) for additional income and energy sharing benefits.

Do local councils in Sydney offer solar incentives?

Some local councils in Sydney provide extra support for solar installation, such as rebates, bulk-buy programs, or sustainability grants.

For example, councils like City of Sydney, Northern Beaches, and Parramatta have offered programs that encourage households and small businesses to switch to solar or join Sustainable Homes initiatives.

Availability changes regularly, so it’s best to check your local council website or ask your solar installer for the latest local offers.

Is solar worth it in Sydney?

Yes, solar is absolutely worth it in Sydney. The city receives around 4.2 peak sun hours per day, which is ideal for solar power generation. A standard 6.6kW solar system can produce about 9,000 to 10,000 kWh per year, covering most of an average household’s energy use.

With high electricity prices in NSW and ongoing federal rebates, most Sydney homeowners see a payback period of 3 to 5 years and long-term savings of up to $40,000 over the system’s lifespan. Solar also increases property value and protects against future energy price rises.
